Montpellier is a student town: small and medieval, but quite international. Probably these six universities are to thank for the abundant selection of lavish avocado toasts, vegan buddha bowls, and bourbon-butter mapled bacon pancakes. Hearty open faced sandwiches that the owner Katrin perfects to her childhood memories. Kropka is a one time special in Eimsbüttel, rustic-cozy, delicious and casual. Perfect for breakfast, specialty coffee and cake, laptop-working, lunch, an early dinner – or just to chat with friends.
Bordeaux is the French town of wine… but I was more interested in the avo-toasts, matcha and coconut lattes, vegan gluten-free fudgy chocolate cookies and organic ice cream parlors across from cathedrals and churches on plazas, merged by narrow stoned alleyways and beautiful copper lamps . . . and I’m keeping myself short. Plus wild beaches, spectacular sanddunes and the coasts of oyster farmings are just an hours train ride away.
A third wave coffee shop with some of the best breakfasts in Hamburg. All is dainty, delicious and there are vegan and gluten free options as well. They’re famous for their fluffy, soft waffles, my favorite being the lime-mascarpone one. But it’s also the perfect spot for a work date, or leisurely breakfast with avocado quinoa fritters or a lox-red beet toast.
The only specialty coffee shop by the famous parts of the harbor and near some other beautiful landmarks of Hamburg. If you like thick Italian hot chocolate, you better come here with your flat white mate!
