Nishta – Veg(an) in Croatia

The best vegetarian/vegan meals are to be found here!  This is not just any restaurant, squished in the narrow alleyways of Old Town Dubrovnik. A bit out of the way, but going there is never a detour, unless you are a complete carnivore 😉  Nishta literally means “nothing” because the locals believed there was naught to eat, if not fish or meat, until a swiss-croatian couple proved them wrong.  They’re very popular, for good reason, and we barely got a spot.  It’s cozy inside and out.  The inside walls are all painted a deep purple, partially covered with “inspirational quotes”.

I opted for the cucumber, apple, lime juice which was the perfect dinner accompaniment – slightly sweet and sour.  Almost every dish I tried was really tasty, but my favorites were Ping Pong, the Crusty (a vegan, flax seed pizza covered in tomato paste, lots of veggies, arugula, almond cheese) and Pastalicious (tofu, ginger rice noodles).  The salad bar had a well chosen variety, amongst the toppings: roasted pumpkin, flax seeds, lentils…  And last but not least I’d definitely recommend the local Smokve i Prosek, a one-of-a-kind dessert of cinnamon-y dried fig, wine infused mascarpone cream — yummy!
